Drug ring in NH extending to Canada-Vermont border busted

Posted: Updated:
CONCORD, N.H. -

A multimillion dollar drug ring has been busted in southern New Hampshire, but prosecutors say the conspiracy extends all the way to Canada and the drugs, in some cases are coming right through Vermont

Local, state and federal investigators filed into the United States Attorney's Office in Concord, N.H. to deliver a message to drug dealers.

"We intended to attack organized drug distribution rings and bring them to justice as best we can," said Donald Feith, N.H. Asst. U.S. Attorney.

A picture of the latest bust offers proof. There was 30 pounds of pot, 2 pounds of MDMA, known as Molly or Ecstasy, $85,000 in cash and several guns including a machine gun with a silencer.

Ten men who live in the Manchester, N.H. area have been arrested, but authorities say it's an international ring.

"A distribution network that reaches to the Canadian border and beyond," said Feith.

Like similar drug rings in the past, police say the marijuana is being walked across rural parts of the border in hockey bags. As much as 100 to 200 pounds a week stashed in northern New York and Vermont before heading south.

"I can't say all of it is, but I can say that some of it is. Vermont as you well know has a very large border. Surreptitious crossings from Canada are not unknown. It is one of the problems that Vermont faces," said Feith.

The bust stemmed from a yearlong investigation that included controlled buys and wire taps. N.H. authorities declined to comment if they are working with law enforcement in Vermont.

"I am going to defer to answer that. We are in a complaint stage and we have continued investigation to do," said Feith.

"The case now moves to the grand jury for indictment and police are looking for four more individuals connected to the ring. One that authorities say was trafficking more than a million dollars in drugs, every single year, across the region.

The men are being charged with distribution of controlled substances and conspiracy. Officials say they are working with Canadian police to track down the sources of supply.
