Swimmer hit by boat

Posted: Updated:
HINESBURG, Vt. - Dan Sharp describes his wife, Jane Marinsky, as an avid swimmer, who enjoyed her daily route around Lake Iroquois. But Sharp says Saturday, her swim took a near deadly turn.

"She's a very fit person," Sharp said. He says as a 62-year-old veteran swimmer, safety is her number one priority. Sharp said Marinsky swam with a white swim cap and a brightly colored buoy attached to her so that boaters could see her.

Sharp said, "She drags that behind her. In fact there are many people around the lake who know her, not because they actually know her, but they say oh you're the lady who swims around the lake."

That's why Sharp says he was shocked when Hinesburg Police showed up at his home Saturday afternoon to tell him his wife had been struck by a power boat.

"She's not hard to see. She was easy to see. People saw her all the time. But they only see here if they're paying attention. But you can get in a boat and start screwing around, especially if there are kids around and you're not paying attention," Sharp said.

Sharp said Marinsky was rushed to the hospital and suffered multiple broken ribs and a cracked sternum. But he says luckily, the propeller missed her and she is alive. But he says people should take this as a cautionary tale of the dangers of what he calls, reckless behavior.

We reached out to both Vermont State Police and Hinesburg Police but had not yet heard back when this story was published. We were able to confirm the police did respond to an incident. However, we do not know if police have identified the boat operator and if that person will face charges. Sharp said his wife is now in stable condition.
