Leading market intelligence firm expands MEAP coverage in response to surge in mobile application development projects among enterprises in 2014.
Sterling, VA (PRWEB) July 01, 2014
Current Analysis, Inc., a leading provider of timely, practical market intelligence and advice for the global IT and telecom industries, announced today a new Product Assessment class of reports around the evolving market of mobile enterprise application platforms (MEAP) products and services. Current Analysis has rated IBM and SAP as the market leaders with mature and comprehensive portfolios that leverage cloud infrastructure and traditional middleware technology to support enterprise mobile app development and deployment projects. Also included in the analysis are very strong competitors, Oracle and Kony.
Current Analysis has also released a new Market Assessment Report, called 'MEAP Leaders are Rated on Ability to Evolve via Security Consolidation, Services, and Standards-based Technology,' on the growing convergence of MEAP and mobile security, including profiles of industry leaders and ratings on their progress based on recent innovations in mobile app platforms/services and mobile security.
Brad Shimmin, Service Director of Business Technology and Software at Current Analysis announced that, "we are very excited to deepen our investment in this important area of analytical research," said Shimmin. "Consumer-driven device heterogeneity has simply pushed enterprise mobility beyond the technical acumen of most enterprise IT shops, a situation that demands a single integration, management, and security platform such as those explored within our new assessment class."
Over the past 12-18 months, MEAPs have evolved from proprietary solutions to ones which leverage open source and standards-based mobile technologies; solutions that decouple front end and back-end platforms to cater to mobile developers framework familiarity; cloud-based integration and platform services to ease integration and development requirements; and solutions which are beginning to consolidate security/management to address mounting CIO concerns. From the middleware/MEAP vendors perspective, mobile app platforms and services have become a method for enhancing the value proposition of their broader and more lucrative portfolios and emerging cloud infrastructures, including IaaS, PaaS, and SaaS offerings.
"Initial proprietary MEAP offerings did not appeal to enterprises which have continued to outsource the development of mobile apps," said Charlotte Dunlap, Senior Analyst, Application Platforms, Current Analysis. "As a result, middleware providers and some MEAP pure plays have had to embrace standards-based mobile technologies in order to spur adoption among enterprises which are now under pressure to bring the development task back in-house and under the wing of CXOs to ensure security and transform business operations."
The gradual adoption of BYOD programs and commoditization of device management features have shifted the emphasis to mobile application and content management and placed a premium on enabling developers to more easily secure their apps as well as securely distribute them. This has fueled the growth of not only containerization and app wrapping, but the addition of private enterprise app stores, enabling end users to download productivity apps and avoid exposing the enterprise to more vulnerable public apps especially Android apps.
The security of mobile devices and applications in the enterprise is a top of mind issue for many CXOs with good reason. Mobile malware, now 10 years old, is growing at an exponential rate, employees are using their smartphones at work, whether the enterprise has a formal BYOD program or not, and jail-broken devices can be easily compromised, said Paula Musich, Principal Analyst, Enterprise Security, Current Analysis.
