Vt. police to step up traffic enforcement over holiday

WILLISTON, Vt. -

Vermont state police will be out in force over the upcoming holiday weekend to step up traffic enforcement in what, so far, has been a relatively safe year on the state's roads.

Through the first six months of 2014, 16 people have died in traffic accidents in Vermont. That would put the state on pace for 32 deaths-- fewer than half the number of people killed last year.

Law enforcement authorities do note that fatal accidents tend to increase in the summer months and they are particularly concerned around holiday periods like the Fourth of July when people are attending celebrations and the risk of drunk driving rises.

Troopers will be staging sobriety and vehicle safety checkpoints July 3-6, focused on reducing impaired and aggressive driving.
