New Vermont psychiatric hospital opens

Posted: Updated:
BERLIN, Vt. - Vermont's new state psychiatric hospital is ready to begin treating patients.

A ribbon-cutting was held at the new facility in Berlin Tuesday morning. The 25-bed hospital comes online nearly three years after Tropical Storm Irene destroyed the old Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury.

The first patients are expected to move in over the next few days.

"So today we open this state hospital with a sense of pride. This is what I love about being Vermont's governor. It reflects the very best in our values and who we are as Vermonters and how we want to be, the best mental health state in the country full stop," said Gov. Peter Shumlin, D-Vermont.

The project cost $28.5 million with more than half covered by federal disaster aid and insurance.
