"Got here and found out two of my nephews had passed away," David Slater said.

Slater is in shock over a tragic fire in the Ausable hamlet of Harkness. A house fire killed Tucker Burnham, 7, and his brother Payden, 4.

"My brother-in-law's sister Penny was watching the kids. There was five of them in the house," Slater said.

Penny Stone managed to get her two kids out of the burning home. Three others remained trapped.

"The adult that made it out, Penny Stone, had told us when she discovered the fire she attempted to extinguish it and get the children out, but was unable to get all the children out," N.Y. State Police Capt. Robert LaFountain said.

A grandmother did run in to save one of the children still inside, a 6-month-old girl.

WCAX Reporter Logan Crawford spoke with the family's grandmother who was able to rescue the child currently in the hospital listed in critical condition. She said if she could have saved all the children, she would have.

Police say the cause of the fire is under investigation.

"We would like to know how it started, where it started," Slater said.

Autopsies on the two brothers will be performed.

"God decided he needed two little angels," Slater said.

Police would not say if the fire is considered suspicious.

A gofundme site has been set up to help the Burnham family with expenses. Click here for more information.
