Vermonters seek fuel options for winter heating

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

It's one of the hottest months of the year, but many Vermonters are seeking out options to secure their winter heating needs.

Matt Cota of the Vermont Fuel Dealers Association says this year's cold winter coupled with supply problems led to high heating costs.

He says while locking in fuel-oil prices is not a new trend, doing so with natural gas is on the rise. But he says regardless of which fuel a customer prefers, new payment structures are becoming popular.

"What we're seeing is more of an increase in consumer that want to develop budget plans, fixed prices that they pay over-time rather than a pre-buy which they would pay up front, all at once," Cota explained.

Cota says last winter strained the entire energy complex from natural gas to wood pellets.

He says Vermonters are also looking to save costs in the coming winter by air-sealing homes and buying more efficient equipment.
