Fireworks show goes on, despite severe weather in Burlington

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Wicked weather wreaked havoc on Vermont cities and towns planning to celebrate an early Independence Day. Festivities were canceled or postponed in some areas. But in Burlington the fireworks were a go after a brief storm evacuation.

The crackle of red, white and blue fireworks filled the skies over Burlington Thursday. At the annual July 3rd celebration people flocked to the docks to get a glimpse of Vermont's largest fireworks show.

It was a display that almost didn't happen. Thousands were evacuated from the waterfront earlier in the day as a cruel July storm rolled through the Queen City. Thunder, lightning and rain sent everyone down at the waterfront scattering for cover. But event organizers were adamant about trying to fit in the fireworks.

"You know the barge is in place. The fireworks are loaded and ready to go,” said Burlington Parks and Rec Director Jesse Bridges. “This is a big show, a lot of fireworks, and we know people really want to watch this."

Many were left wondering if the show would happen. Spectators who had already arrived were told to seek cover. For everyone else, Burlington's Parks and Recreation website went without an update for hours.

As the storm subsided, those who had stuck out the rain were happy to hear the show was back on.

"We wouldn't miss it. We'd stick it out," said Jody LeClair of Burlington.

"We stayed inside for a little bit and then when it started to clear up, we came out here and we're really looking forward to it," said spectator Noa Saunders.

A daredevil's air show preceded the fireworks and despite the rain, thousands still flocked to the water to see the show.

The fireworks show lasted for nearly 30 minutes. Organizers for the show say they normally expect as many as 20,000 people to watch, but they estimate about half those people may have been scared off by the rain this year.
