Vermont Yankee closure fast-tracking permit?

Posted: Updated:

Vermont Yankee's impending closure may help the plant to get an expedited thermal discharge permit.

Usually the permits take years, but the Vermont Agency of Natural Resources plans to approve the permit more quickly because the nuclear power plant is closing at the end of this year.

Vermont Yankee releases its heated water into the Connecticut River. Under the new permit, the plant will be required to keep the river cooler than it has under other thermal discharge permits. Some discharge will still happen even after the plant closes.

The public can weigh in through August 3. A public hearing will be held in mid-August in Vernon.
