How common are bear attacks in the Green Mountains?

Vermont Fish and Wildlife officials say they're actually extremely rare. In fact, only one person has been killed by a bear attack in state history. It was decades ago when a hunter thought he killed the bear. But the bullet only grazed the animal and it attacked the hunter.

Experts say be sure to take in bird feeders, avoid leaving garbage lying around and never get too close to cubs.

"People don't need to be afraid of bears at all. They need to respect them though. Once bears lose fear of humans it's going to be all over for the bears," Vt. Wildlife Director Mark Scott said.
