The parking police are out in Plattsburgh

The parking police are out in Plattsburgh.

The city hired a new full-time parking enforcement officer -- who will be ticketing cars parked longer than what's allowed. The Plattsburgh Common Council says it was concerned drivers were using 2 hour spots for all day parking.

The city admits it's been lax with enforcing its parking laws until now.

"For budgetary reasons the city of Plattsburgh had to cut back the parking enforcement in years past. But now we're realizing -- especially with the South Catherine Street project -- that parking is an issue and we have to make sure that people are able to access downtown businesses and businesses are able to benefit from their patrons being able to find parking spots,” said Joshua Krester of the Plattsburgh Common Council.

Council members say the city is not making money on the new enforcement. And the position will pay for itself with the fines.
