Bay Day's Great Race in St. Albans

Posted: Updated:
ST. ALBANS, Vt. - The starting line was packed with racers Sunday at the Great Race in St. Albans Bay Park.

Teams went head to head by foot and on bike for a shot at first place. There isn't much required to compete in the Great Race, just a can-do attitude and a love for the outdoors.

"Our team name is 'who needs training' yes," said first time runner Phylicia Cicilio.

But for those with an eye on the prize, preparation is a lifestyle.

"I've done it like 24 times, maybe?" said Shari Bashaw.

Athletes compete in 30 categories. About 200 teams comes out each year.

"You start out with the 5k run and then you get on the bike and you do the 12mile loop," said Bashaw.

With the high winds, the 3-mile canoe portion of the race was canceled. But it's no less of a challenge for locals looking for a little competition. The City has been organizing the event for decades-- as a way to bring the community together.

"You hear people talking about the Great Race in January and February, March because it's gone on for so many years, 35 years, its one of the biggest events in town, explains race director Jay Cummings.

"I love to challenge myself and the more I challenge myself and see what I can do, its just exciting," said Bashaw.

First time runner Cody Jackson comments, "I got a little tripped up in the beginning, like just catching up with other people's paces but then like later on it smoothed out and I got to the speed I wanted."

But it's endurance that determines who will come out on top.

"I think I placed first but I'm not sure," said Bashaw.

"We give away more then 300 trophies and awards so it's a lot of fun, the community looks forward to it every year." said Cummings.

After the race, participants hung around to wrap up their fourth of July celebrations.
A great way to end the holiday weekend.
