Winooski plans for new hotel downtown

WINOOSKI, Vt. -

Winooski's roundabout has restaurants, bars and retail. And developers hope to soon add a hotel to downtown's growing list of attractions.

Project Developer Adam Dubroff said, "We're following the master plan to have a hotel that fits in with the architectural design that's already established in Winooski."

The proposed site of the hotel is a lot owned by Pizzagalli Properties on the southeast corner of the roundabout, right next to the Champlain Mill. Dubroff says the idea is a 60-70-room boutique hotel fitting with the eclectic and unique atmosphere of downtown.

"It is the last parcel of land that hasn't been developed in downtown Winooski, and the downtown area is very vibrant, and I think having a hotel will bring more people downtown," he said.

Dubroff presented preliminary plans to the Winooski City Council Monday.

While the council expressed desire to give the project the green light, members say some issues need to be addressed in a more fleshed out plan. Parking and the displacement of the farmers market that currently calls the lot home were main concerns.

"My only concern would be making sure we have a well-rehearsed plan for making sure that farmers market continues for all those folks that have made that their hub," said Winooski City Council member Brian Sweeney.

The City Council said coming up with a viable solution for the farmers market is something that needs to discussed further. Developers hope to present a more concrete plan addressing the council's concerns at an August meeting. From there the council will vote on whether to move forward with the process. But while the project developer said he did not have a concrete number of what the project would cost, in a perfect world he'd see the project done by spring of 2016.
