New spiny water flea headed for Lake Champlain

Posted: Updated:

A new, invasive spiny water flea is headed for Lake Champlain.

In fact, biologists believe the tiny creature is probably in the lake already, but the population isn't big enough yet to detect it.

The spiny water flea disrupts the food chain and clings to fishing line. Scientists have been documenting its northward spread for several years, since it first showed up in Lake Champlain feeder canal.

Boaters are asked to make sure their vessels are clean, drained and dry before launching in any waterway to prevent introduction of the species.
