NEWPORT, Vt. -

Controversy in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom where a 35-year-old man was stabbed to death this weekend. No one is charged in the case and police are releasing little information. Some in the community worry justice won't be served.

Friends tell us Isaac Hunt was a shy, quiet, father of two who planned to take his boys to the races the night he died. He loved parks and was a homebuilder. Friends tell us that he was never violent and rarely raised his voice. But Christian and Garrett Cornelius say Hunt tried to break into their home and they were forced to protect themselves.

It happened Saturday afternoon around 1 p.m. on Lake Road in Newport.

"It's one of those things nobody ever wants to see or experience," Christian Cornelius said.

Christian, 31, and his younger brother, Garrett, 24, were home when they say they began to receive threatening text messages from Isaac Hunt. That was just before they say Hunt and his girlfriend, Kayla McCoullough, 25, came running to their door.

"We tied the door shut with a bicycle chain when we knew that he was coming and when he ripped through the bicycle chain, he ripped through the door, the only reason he was able to was because he used the key that he stole from us over the last couple of weeks," Christian Cornelius said.

The brothers say Hunt was a longtime friend. The brothers say they're not sure why Hunt came to their home, but say it may have been a dispute over $300 they say Hunt owed Christian Cornelius.

"I used an iron bar to keep him where he was and he split the shovel down on my head and that's when I started to feel myself losing consciousness," Garrett Cornelius said.

"We did the best we could to push him outside and he kept coming in, and out of respect for the family, I hate to say much more than that," Christian Cornelius said.

During the fight, police say Christian Cornelius sliced Hunt in the leg with a knife. Hunt died on the scene.

The brothers claim it was self-defense.

"When you think that you know somebody like that and they come through your door like that it is a living nightmare. You find yourself not hesitating. You do what you have to do," Garrett Cornelius said.

We wanted to speak to police to find out more about what happened, but they declined comment. Prosecutor Alan Franklin also declined to give details, saying the case is still with the police. And we wanted to speak with Hunt's girlfriend, but our attempts to locate her were unsuccessful.
