Public weighs in on Burlington Telecom bailout

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Burlington officials urged state regulators Tuesday night to support the plan to bail out Burlington Telecom, but many residents expressed reservations about the proposal.

The Public Service Board must OK the plan, which includes a legal settlement with BT's major creditor Citibank and a loan from a private investor to pay that settlement. The plan from Mayor Miro Weinberger, D-Burlington, would eventually see the city partner with a private company to operate the cable, internet and phone company in the future.

Several people who spoke at the public hearing worried about losing control of BT.

"Condition the sale so that more public ownership, local ownership could be maintained," said Gregory Epler-Wood, who supports the deal.

"As a citizen I'm concerned about the sale of Burlington Telecom to a private owner," said Janet Patterson, who opposes the deal.

The Public Service Board gave no timetable for when it will rule on the proposal.
