E. coli closes part of Burlington beach

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. - A portion of Burlington's biggest beach is closed due to E. coli contamination.

City officials say the water in the southern section of North Beach tested above safe levels for the bacteria.

The water in the main swimming areas passed all tests and both the water and beach remain open.

"I was in here a couple of days ago, I'm not a scientist, I had no idea, it's just shocking," said Zach Brown, Burlington.

"Scooping the poop, using the pump outs for boaters in the water, making sure that we design and repair runoff facilities correctly," said Jesse Bridges, Burlington Parks and Recreation Department.

Bridges says this is the first test to come back above recommended levels at any of the city's beaches so far this season.

Bridges says his team will continue to keep the South End of North Beach closed until test results come back below recommended levels.

The city is retesting the southern area and those results will be available Wednesday.
