Disaster drill at USPS in Essex Junction

Posted: Updated:

It wasn't just the storm causing an emergency response Tuesday. The U.S. Postal Service held a full-scale emergency readiness drill at the processing and distribution center in Essex Junction. It included an evacuation of the facility, the arrival of emergency vehicles and decontamination activities.

The exercise is designed to simulate an emergency and evaluate the response by the Postal Service, local emergency teams, health care providers and law enforcement to a potential hazardous material emergency.

"It's different when you actually walk through the actual event and exercise. You learn things you can do better, so even if it happens for real, then you're prepared, you're in a better situation," said Chris Bell with the Vt. Health Department.

The Vermont Health Department runs dozens of these types of drills each year for various organizations simulating different disasters.
