Bennington couple says home taken over by drug dealers

Posted: Updated:
BENNINGTON, Vt. -

Kayla Foucher of Bennington told police Monday that there were five drug dealers in her house that they wanted to kill her and that they wouldn't leave. She says she was lured into selling her body and crack cocaine with promises of big money from a drug dealer from Rhode Island. Bennington residents say that young women getting lured into illegal activity like this doesn't surprise them.

Crystal Hughes lives in Bennington. She says she's not at all shocked that police say a Bennington woman was enticed into prostitution and sold drugs for a Rhode Island drug dealer out of this house on Pleasant Street.

"They come out here and they find a girl and whatever and they get the girl to sell drugs," said Hughes.

Law enforcement officials say they were called by Foucher and Joshua Hayes after a 28-year-old man named Nicholas Ranglin of Rhode Island and one of his accomplices assaulted them with a pistol. They allegedly were arguing over drugs.

Foucher and Hayes say they met Ranglin through a mutual friend and Ranglin promised Foucher $700 a week if she'd prostitute herself and sell crack for him She admitted being addicted to drugs and went along with the plan, until things got out of control and Ranglin and his associates wouldn't leave the house.

"He was only in this community to traffic drugs that's it," said Erica Marthage, Bennington County prosecuter.

Ranglin appeared in Bennington criminal court Wednesday charged with possession and sale of cocaine and assault. He pleaded not guilty and his attorney asked for his bail to be reduced from $100,000 to $50,000. The judge denied his request.

"Was engaging in the business of trafficking cocaine in the community and was utilizing local young women to facilitate the sale of cocaine," said Judge Nancy Corsones.

Hughes says she's not surprised Foucher got caught up in Ranglin's plan, as she's personally had friends approached to engage in similar activities.

"They just get mixed up with the wrong people you know, they see a cute guy who comes from the city, they want to get mixed up, and they get mixed up," said Hughes.

Officials say this isn't the first time Ranglin has gotten into this kind of trouble. In court, Marthage read off a laundry list of past convictions in Rhode Island including manufacturing cocaine and firearms charges. Ranglin will be back in court next week.
