IBM to invest billions in semiconductor research

Posted: Updated:
ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. - It appears IBM is not getting out of the microchip business after all. News reports out Wednesday say Big Blue is investing big time in next-generation chip technology.

For months, national financial media have been reporting IBM wants to ditch its chipmaking operations to improve profitability. Experts have anticipated a sale to another big chipmaking company, GlobalFoundries.

But Wednesday, several financial media outlets reported that IBM is pledging to spend $3 billion in the next five years in developing new chip technology.

It's unclear at this point what this pledge means for the IBM plant in Essex Junction.
