FairPoint unions ready for weekend strike vote

Posted: Updated:

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Unions representing nearly 2,000 employees of telecommunications firm FairPoint in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont are set to vote on whether to authorize a strike.

Meetings about the strike vote are scheduled for Friday in South Burlington, Vermont; Saturday in Bangor, Maine; and Sunday in Portland, Maine and Manchester, New Hampshire.

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers System Council T-9 and Communications Workers of America Local 1400 began negotiating with management April 25. Contracts expire on Aug. 2.

The vote is required in advance of a work stoppage, but doesn't require the union members to strike. Union leadership could make that decision later. Leaders of both unions say they expect members to vote in favor of strike authorization.

The company says service to customers will continue if there is a strike.
