Judiciary Committee passes Leahy cellphone unlocking bill

WASHINGTON -

There was little controversy Thursday over a bill authored by Sen. Patrick Leahy that would give Americans more freedom over their cellphones.

The Judiciary Committee voted unanimously Thursday for the bill that would allow people to keep their existing cellphones when switching cell service providers. The bill would overturn a 20-12 government ruling that allows providers to lock-in their service to a phone, even after a contract expires.

The House has already passed a different version of this bill.
