Bennington man pleads not guilty to sexual assault charges

Posted: Updated:
BENNINGTON, Vt. -

Officials say a Bennington man they busted this week attempting to lure and sexually assault a teen has done this before.

Jonathan Tobin, 25, pleaded not guilty this week and is being held without bail.

Police say they arrested Tobin after a trooper set up a Facebook account posing as a 14-year-old girl. Tobin then sent inappropriate photos of himself to that profile and attempted to set up a meeting to have sex at the Bennington Recreation Center.

Tobin is now facing several charges including those for past lewd and lascivious behavior with a different minor.

"Lewd and lascivious with a child, a attempted sexual assault, and two counts of luring a child. He is charged as a habitual offender, because he has a number of prior felony convictions," Bennington County State's Attorney Erica Marthage said.

Officials say Tobin is currently unemployed and was listed as homeless when they nabbed him.
