Special connection to nature

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH HERO, Vt. - Dozens of small farms and artists invited visitors to celebrate art Sunday in South Hero at the open farm and studio tour. One artist shared her crafts, works of art she calls a special connection to nature.

A small garage sits on Good Hope Farm in South Hero home to Anne Zolotas' creations.

Piles of wood crowd the small studio, waiting to be transformed.

"What I'm looking for when I take wood is something with a curve to it because there are no straight lines in nature,” said Zolotas.

Scavenging the beaches and rivers, she never returns empty-handed...always finding pieces of wood designed by nature for a specific role in her work.

"Bodies and wings and necks and feathers,” said Zolotas.

Her most recent project, a pointer.

"With these animals they have this enormous chest and the capacity to run for hours,” said Zolotas.

It all started years ago when Anne worked for a carpenter at the University of Vermont.

“We worked with table saws and drill presses and hand saws,” said Zolotas.

She began with ink, then it was wire..now, it's wood.

"You know when to stop when all the space that needs to be enclosed is closed and then you stand back and you say it's done," she adds.

Each piece takes about 30 hours to complete, some made custom and all of them different.

"It was going to be the fulfillment of a passion to create art and specifically horses because I've always loved them all my life, I grew up with them," said Zolotas.

Outside, finished wooden sculptures fill the yard, some standing others sitting.

"I said to myself, that is a horse lying down and that is the near foreleg and I'm going to make one,” said Zolotas.

It's hard work and requires a sharp eye but for Anne, it's a sort of escape.

"Artists just create art, this is what they love to do, its not something that you think about,” said Zolotas.
