Man accused in bear attack hoax held with lack of bail

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. - A man accused of trying to cover up an attempted murder with claims of a bear attack was back in court Monday.

Lucas Gingras, 28, is currently being held for lack of $100,000 bail. Police say he intentionally kicked his girlfriend, 44-year-old Ladonna Merriman, off a cliff while high on drugs in June. He told police that a bear was chasing them and that he told Merriman to jump off the cliff to get away. His attorney argued he can't meet the current conditions to get out and asked the judge not to hold Gingras without bail.

"At this point he does not have any housing to even submit for approval, nor a responsible adult. So effectively it is a hold without bail and he understands that he is not going to be released in all likelihood while this case is pending," said Jessica Brown, Gingras’ attorney.

The judge did not change the current conditions; Gingras remains in jail for lack of bail.
