Leahy pushes to extend largest hiking trail into Vermont

WASHINGTON, D.C. -

Vermont wants to become part of the nation's largest hiking trail.

It's called the North Country National Scenic Trail. It currently runs from North Dakota through six more states, ending in New York, for a total of 4,600 miles. It passes right through the heart of the Adirondack Park with its eastern trailhead in Crown Point.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, is pushing legislation to extend the trail into Vermont. The plan calls for it to connect to the Appalachian Trail which continues northeastward all the way to Maine and southward all the way to Georgia.
