Northern New York prepares for disaster

Posted: Updated:
LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -

Northern New Yorkers are preparing for when disaster strikes.

The New York National Guard is visiting Lake Placid to teach citizens basic survival techniques and how to deal with catastrophes. A similar training session was held in Plattsburgh last month.

The seminar is part of a statewide initiative to train New Yorkers how to survive on their own for natural disasters like Tropical Storm Irene. Survival backpacks will be handed out at the session.

"It's got a radio, AM-FM radio, with batteries. There's an emergency blanket, there's water, there's some rations in there. It's basically a good starter kit for people to understand what they should have and an idea of what they should be stockpiling in their home as well," said Command Sgt. Maj. David Oliver of the New York National Guard.

The session is being held at the Lake Placid Conference Center from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Click here to learn more about the emergency preparedness program.
