Building concerns delay Montpelier sidewalk construction

Posted: Updated:

Concerns over the condition of a historic building have brought construction to a halt in Montpelier.

Upgrades to the sidewalks on Elm Street, at the intersection of School Street and Court Street, have been postponed because of safety concerns.

The contractor noticed the building near the site had loose bricks on the third floor.

The project has been put off until the wall can be fixed.

The project was scheduled to be finished next month, but may not resume until next year.

"It's a historic building so the brick work, the mortar, et cetera, has to meet historic preservation. It's in downtown so we have to go through the downtown review and make sure it meets the criteria established by the commission," said Todd Law, the director of Montpelier Public Works.

The building is still occupied. A temporary wall has been put up for safety.
