GOP challenges $25K contribution to Hassan

Posted: Updated:

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - The New Hampshire Republican Party has filed a complaint with the attorney general's office about a $25,000 contribution to Gov. Maggie Hassan from a labor union's political action committee.

The Concord Monitor reports (http://bit.ly/1zLYd3i) filings with the secretary of state's office show the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers PAC gave the amount to Friends of Maggie Hassan on June 12. That's the same day Hassan filed to run for re-election.

The complaint says the donation violates the state's political contribution limits. Hassan's campaign and the IBEW say it's legal because it was made before she was officially a candidate.

Late Thursday, Hassan's campaign said it has asked Attorney General Joseph Foster for an expedited review of the donation.

Contribution laws say candidates who don't accept a voluntary spending cap can take up to $5,000 from individuals during the primary and general election and up to $1,000 from committees.
