BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A western New York man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for killing his 77-year-old mother inside her Buffalo-area apartment last year.
Local media report that 46-year-old Primitivo Cruz spoke for about 15 minutes during his sentencing in a Buffalo court on Wednesday, denying that he killed Carol Quinn.
The retired teacher's aide was found slain in her West Seneca apartment in May 2013. Police say she had been beaten and strangled.
Cruz turned himself in to police and was charged with second-degree murder.
A jury convicted him last May on the murder charge.
Prosecutors say Quinn had been trying to get her unemployed son to move out of her apartment. Officials say she was killed after a judge issued an order of protection against Cruz.
