JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - Hundreds of police officers and mourners have gathered at a Jersey City church for the funeral of a rookie police officer killed in the line of duty.
Fellow officers lined the streets Friday and marched between a funeral home and the church where the funeral is being held for Officer Melvin Santiago.
The 23-year-old was killed Sunday in what authorities have called an ambush. His assailant was killed during a subsequent shootout outside a 24-hour drug store.
Police in New Jersey also are mourning the death of a northern New Jersey officer killed in the line of duty Thursday. Waldwick Officer Christopher Goodell was killed when his unmarked car was struck by an 18-wheeler.
