Sen. Sanders breaks fundraising record

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -  Senator Bernie Sanders might still be four years away from running for reelection, but he's already breaking fundraising records.

The senator raked in more than $716,000 just in the past three months, according to campaign finance reports.  That's about nine times the amount he raised last quarter.  Hints of a possible presidential run are fueling an elevated national position.  Senator Sanders says his campaign's fund-raising efforts are about other races besides his own.

"One of the things we're doing is refunneling some of that money into other candidates. I worry very, very much about a republican control over the United States Senate. They control the house. I don't think -- I know I don't want to see that," says Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont.

Senator Sanders points out that most of the money that came in is from donors giving small amounts -- the average contribution, roughly 41 dollars.
His campaign war chest now totals more than four-and-a-half million dollars.
