Flash flooding damages homes in Windsor County

ANDOVER, Vt. -

Roads caved in and homes washed away-- a raging river fueled by torrential rain left hundreds in Andover without power Monday. The flash flooding in the town had some people dubbing it the sequel to one of the worst storms in the state's history.

"All I could think about was Irene,” said Kevin Kunze of Andover.

The wild weather starting in the early afternoon prompted a massive response from emergency crews. One woman was rescued from her home while water rushed through it.

"We don't know what's safe. Anything with water over the top of it-- don't go over it; turn the other way. We have lost a lot of roads, we have lost a lot of houses," Chester Fire Chief Matthew Wilson said.

There was also flooding on Route 11 in Chester, nearly wiping out a bridge. Siding from homes could be seen strewn about.

The banks of the Williams River were no match for the rush of water. The home ironically dubbed "River Haus" narrowly missed slipping into the water, its garage was flattened. Power was out for many homes in Chester after propane tanks burst, leaking gas into the air.

Bruce Orchitt came back to see his house spared, but found a tree on his garage.

"You come down over to this side and oh my gosh," said Orchitt

Chief Wilson is encouraging people to stay inside until the flooding subsides.

"If people are in a safe dry place, we want them to stay in that safe dry place,” Wilson explained.

The Red Cross did open up an evacuation center at the Chester fire station, and as of late Monday night, just one person was left at the facility.

Cleanup crews will continue working overnight on repairs. Town officials say they hope most people will have power again by Tuesday morning.
