ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt. - A former school superintendent is suing a Vermont state police officer for malicious prosecution and defamation.

Caledonia Central School superintendent Martha Tucker was charged last year with failing to report allegations of child abuse and neglect under the state's mandatory reporting law. The charges against Tucker were later dismissed.

Now, Tucker is suing Vt. State Police Det. Lyle Decker, claiming he mischaracterized witness statements and lied in his report. Tucker says she suffered significant harm to her reputation and that has impacted her ability to land a new job.

"And as a consequence, we believe it is important for her to be able to, in an equally public way, prevail in a claim against the party who wronged her," said Pietro Lynn, Tucker's lawyer.
