Baby hospitalized under 'suspicious circumstances' dies

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. - Police are investigating the death of a 4-week-old baby. The baby, Saunder Gilruth, died Wednesday at Fletcher Allen Health Care.

Burlington Police responded to a house on Isham Street July 22, and the unresponsive baby was rushed to the hospital. The child died after being removed from life support.

Police said due to the age and unknown details surrounding the incident, the case was referred to the Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations as a case of suspicious circumstances.

Chittenden County State's Attorney T.J. Donovan is working with CUSI.

"Well, obviously we know the baby has died and this case remains under investigation. Obviously, given what's going on in the state of Vermont, this is something that's very concerning to us and it remains under investigation. And until that investigation is complete, I can't really say much more," Donovan said.

Investigators are awaiting autopsy results to determine how the child died.

This is the fifth baby death to be investigated by police this year. Three of those cases resulted in murder charges. The other child died of natural causes.
