Gov. Shumlin 'relieved' by Congress's highway plan

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Gov. Peter Shumlin says he's relieved that Congress has provided a short-term fix to the Highway Trust Fund that will keep dozens of road construction projects in the state on-track.

Shumlin says the state's economic depends on strong infrastructure.

Last month, Vermont officials had warned they would have to delay 38 bridge, rail and road projects if more federal money couldn't be found for the trust fund.

Congress provided $11 billion to prevent what would have been a 28 percent reduction in federal highway and mass transit spending during the peak of the summer construction season. But the solution only provides funding through next spring.

Shumlin says he's disappointed Congress did not address the long-term challenge of declining revenues for the Highway Trust Fund.
