Fun underway at Franklin County Field Days

Posted: Updated:

When it comes to the Franklin County Field Days, Lyndon Corey runs the show.

"I have been director since it started, yes," said Corey, Field Days director.

It's meant doing a little bit of everything.

"We use to start here with just the fields and we would have to put up snow fence and he was always there beside us doing the whole thing," said Terry Malone, Field Days director.

And since 1975 Corey's had his signature event.

"My part of it has been horse pulling all the way, no question about that," said Corey.

Now decades after he got things started folks in Highgate are saying thank you.

"He's just a good type personality and everyone loves him," said Malone.

"Lyndon is a mentor of the Franklin County Field Days, he is I believe the only one left of the originals that started this 39 years ago," said Jack Parent, Field Days chairman.

Friday crowds turned out to officially open the Lyndon Corey Pulling Barn. For the folks in charge coming up with the name was a no-brainer.

"His name in the horse pulling circuit is well-known," said Parent.

"I am happy for him, he deserves it," said Joyce Corey, Lyndon's wife.

The brand new 100 by 50 foot facility cost $40,000 and $26,000 came from state grants, the rest from fundraising.

Organizers say the space is already having a positive impact on the annual summer tradition.

"This is the first season it's been used and we had the ox pull in here this morning and it was well tended and the guests were comfortable and I can imagine the oxen were comfortable too," said Parent.

Parent says he's been honored to work with Corey and that the facility that now bears his name gives the Field Days he loves a solid foundation for decades to come.

"It's a nice stamp for our fair that we're here for the long hall and we appreciate that was done in the past," said Parent.

The new facility will also be used in the offseason. The space will be leased out for storage with hopes of bringing in additional fund to support the Field Days in Highgate.
