7th annual Festival of Fools in Burlington

Posted: Updated:

It’s time to get foolish.

Friday kicked off the seventh annual Festival of Fools in downtown Burlington. It’s three straight days of all things silly.

"It's exciting, it’s a weekend to just really celebrate street performing, in all different ways, we've got comedy, physical acts, juggling, you name it, we've got it this weekend," said Eric Ford, Burlington City Arts.

The event is free to the public, but performers like Woody Keppel from The Hokum Brothers will have their hats out ready to be filled. It’s laughs for cash.

"We conjure up a wide variety of people in the audience, all walks of life. They come together and they stop and watch a show, and laugh together and then they put something in the hat, and then they move on and catch another act," said Keppel.

Keppel says Burlington's Festival of Fools is full of vaudeville-type acts, where performers line the street with a variety of shows, an entertainment form that was popular in the 1800s. Back then, vaudeville shows were reserved for the upper class. Now Keppel says everyone can join in.

"The art form is taking hold again in the U.S., and it stayed popular in Europe," said Keppel.

The city estimates that thousands of festival attendees per day and dozens of performers from around the globe.
