No agreement reached between FairPoint, unions

Posted: Updated:

The contract between FairPoint Communications and workers expired Saturday night with no new agreement in place.

FairPoint Communications and workers say they are still miles away from reaching a deal.

The company and union employees representing 1,700 workers across Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine failed to reach a deal Saturday night, an hour and a half before the current contract expired.

Union workers are unhappy with proposed changes to health and retirement benefits, and the company's efforts to hire non-union workers. The company has struggled since buying Verizon's landline telephone operations seven years ago in northern New England.

For now, union workers will continue to work under the old contract until an agreement can be reached. The union says it hopes to resume talks within the next few days.
