Claremont man dies in house fire

Posted: Updated:

Firefighters say a man died in a house fire in Claremont, New Hampshire.

Firefighters found the man on the floor of a house on Warren Street and took him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The fire happened around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

It appears the fire started in a first floor bedroom from cigarettes that may have been thrown away carelessly.

"The conditions in the house were untenable. It could not support human life. Oxygen levels were too low. Carbon monoxide levels were too high and as I said, the smoke was thick to the point of zero visibility," said Chief Richard Bergeron, Claremont Fire Department.

Firefighters say the home did not have working smoke detectors. The victim's identity and exact cause of death have not been released. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.
