Vt. officials join FEMA to assess storm damage

Posted: Updated:

Two teams from Federal Emergency Management Agency are touring southern Vermont Tuesday assessing damage from last week's storm.

Chester was one of the hardest hit communities. State and local officials joined representatives from the FEMA for tours there including a dozen spots in Chester alone. Other towns in Windsor and Windham counties are also being assessed for damage and while some private property was destroyed during the flooding, the tours are focused solely on public infrastructure.

"Culverts washed out, damage to bridges, damage to some abutments. Roads that have been compromised, I guess you would say," said Diego Alvarado, FEMA representative.

The tours will continue Wednesday. Information collected will help the state decide whether to request a federal disaster declaration from President Obama.
