3 states hold 'Samplepalooza' of Connecticut River

Posted: Updated:

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Environmental officials in New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts are coordinating a one-day water testing event in the Connecticut River basin called "Samplepalooza 2014."

Multiple teams are visiting over 50 locations covering more than 1,000 river miles across the three states on Wednesday.

The water samples will be tested for nutrients, chloride and other elements to help determine the amount and impact of pollutants.

The event supports a multi-state effort working to reduce nitrogen pollution in Long Island Sound. Nitrogen from the Connecticut River and others entering the sound has been determined to be the cause of the pollution.

Organizers say if the event is successful, the states may attempt to expand the effort to include more volunteer monitoring sites or make this an annual event.
