Former Milton football players charged in alleged hazing case

Posted: Updated:

Five former Milton High School students have been charged with simple assault.

The charge stems from a hazing investigation involving the 2011-2012 football team.

William Jenkins, 18, Colby Darling, 18, Brian Lasell, 19, Brandon Beliveau, 20, and Ryan Carlson, 20, all of Milton, are charged with assault. All five were cited to appear in court later this month.

The Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations started its investigation in April after receiving the hazing allegations.

"In April of this year we were notified through some information that had been received by the Vermont Department for Children and Families of some potential inappropriate conduct on the football team-- hazing-type conduct. That's why the investigation began in April of this year," said Det. Michael Warren of the Chittenden Unit for Special Investigations.

Milton Superintendent John Barone said in an email Milton High School has a policy forbidding hazing at the school and he is reviewing the results of the investigation. Barone said, "We take student safety seriously and pending the official results of the investigation, the administration, Board and I will review the findings and apply any and all applicable policies, if deemed appropriate."

The first accused student is due to appear in court Aug. 14.
