Burlington adds new electric vehicle charging stations

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

The governor made a pit stop in the Queen City Wednesday where local officials are attempting to jump-start green transportation.

Public-private partnerships led to the installation of a new electric vehicle charging station in Burlington's Marketplace Garage.

Gov. Peter Shumlin and Mayor Miro Weinberger say the state and city do well on most green initiatives, but have not made much progress on transportation. They say if they build a charging network the environmental savings will come.

"So we've got to move this, we need more Vermonters signing up. We've got now over 700 electric cars on the road in Vermont. We want to make that 7,000 as quickly as we can," said Shumlin, D-Vermont.

The new Marketplace garage station and another added at the Lakeview garage bring the total number of public charging units in the city to nine.

Electric car owners say the price of juicing up is equivalent to $1 a gallon of gas at the pump.
