Motorcyclists bring smiles across the state for annual Toy Run

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The engines were revving for the 28th annual United Motorcyclists of Vermont "Toy Run" in Montpelier.

More than 500 bikers participate in the ride from Barre to Montpelier every year and deliver toys to the steps of the Statehouse. The toys are donated to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Montreal, Boston, and Springfield, Massachusetts.

Organizers of the event say all the toys are bought brand new.

"Every motorcyclist that comes and provides a toy, we give them a pin. They wear it as a badge of honor, you'll see many of the bikers have 20 pins on their shirt, they've been to all the toy runs," said Bruce Pelletier of the Mt. Sinai Shriners.

"It is a good thing to do. And everyone loves motorcycles and everyone loves toys and it's just a great way to get a wonderful donation to the Shriners who really do a lot for children," said Holly Wilkins, United Motorcyclists of Vermont President.

Wilkins says the bikers spend thousands of dollars on hundreds of toys every single year.
