Pipeline protesters gather at Statehouse

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - More than 200 people, including a small marching band, have converged on the Vermont Statehouse to protest the Vermont Natural Gas pipeline being built to serve the western part of the state.

The rally organized by the group Rising Tide Vermont featured 10-foot-tall puppets and many banners saying "System Change, Not Climate Change."

The group said it also wanted to protest budget cuts expected to be requested by the Shumlin administration later Monday, which they said would hurt human services for low-income Vermonters.

The event included a confrontation with police who told the protesters they weren't allowed to enter the Statehouse with musical instruments and signs. No arrests were made.
