FairPoint employees picket in South Burlington

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Negotiations between FairPoint Communications and its employees are still far from a resolution.

Employees held an informational picket Tuesday morning in South Burlington.

FairPoint and its workers have been unable to reach common ground over health care plans and pensions. FairPoint says changes to certain benefits are needed to keep up with changes in the industry. But with negotiations scheduled to continue Wednesday, the company does acknowledge the parties remain far apart.

"I hope it doesn't go south and the company doesn't force us to do something crazy, like go out and strike... We are prepared to do that if we have to, but I don't think we need to. And if they're willing to come to the table and talk, we can find a way to find a peaceful solution to our issues," said Mike Spillane of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

If employees do strike, FairPoint plans to outsource jobs in order to continue serving customers.
