MONTPELIER, Vt. -
Some bragging rights for a Vermont bear hunter whose kill last fall is believed to be the biggest black bear taken in Vermont by bow and arrow since 1898.
Kevin Lamere of Brownington shot the bear last October. It tipped the scales at 450 pounds, breaking the previous record of 423 pounds. And now the Vermont Big Game Trophy says Lamere's whopper was significant in another way. With a skull measuring 21 and ten-sixteenths inches, it ties for the largest bear ever taken in all of New England.
State fish and wildlife officials say they are not surprised because of the growth and health of Vermont's bear population.
The next bear hunting season in Vermont begins Sept. 1.
