Rutland solar project construction underway

Posted: Updated:

If the lights go out in a disaster, Rutland has a new project that will keep the power on. City and state leaders celebrated construction beginning Tuesday at the Stafford Hill Solar Farm.

The 7,700 solar panels can generate enough power to support about 2,000 homes.

But what makes this project unique is its storage capability. Energy generated from the array can charge batteries that can be used to power an emergency shelter at nearby Rutland High School.

"But this one is different. It's the perfect project and the perfect partnership to do it," said Imre Gyuk of the United States Energy Department.

The $10 million project on the site of a former landfill is expected to be complete by mid-December.
