Waterbury set to increase affordable housing

Posted: Updated:

Waterbury is set to see an increase in affordable housing.

Federal, state and local officials gathered to celebrate the start of construction of the South Main Street Apartments creating 27 mixed income units at the former Waterbury office complex. The $6.7 million project will transform Ladd Hall, a structure that dates back to 1890.

"So we were looking for a place to develop new rental housing in Waterbury and then Irene hit and everything stopped for a while while Waterbury recovered, but the town and the village have been incredibly supportive that affordable housing was a goal before Irene hit and was a goal after Irene," said Kathy Beyer, Housing Vermont.

"This is a remarkable coming together as providing housing that is needed. It revitalizes this area. Waterbury is a very vibrant town as you know and it will help keep the community going," said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont.

The project was made possible through a patchwork of state and federal funding including $1 million of HUD Community Block Grant disaster funding. It's set to open about a year from now.
